Tying the Deer Hair Shrimp

The Deer Hair Shrimp is a great bug for Bonefish, Redfish and Trout. This is a Tim Borski pattern, but with Capt. Paul’s take on it.

THE RECIPE

Tail: Tan and White marabou, two grizzly hackles and pearl krystal flash
Body: Tan and Cream Sparkle yarn or tan poly yarn
Thread: Chartreuse
Eyes: Small or Medium Lead Eyes
Weed Guard: Mono V
Hook: Gami SL12
Hook Sizes: 2,4,1

Notes: I used a Gami SC15 for this pattern for the purpose of this lesson. Using this hook, the fly will actually ride upside down. Please use a Gamagatsu B10S.

STEP #3
Tie in a clump of brown craft fur.
TYING TIP
I cut about an inch length, place it on top of the shank running the same direction of the hook. I place two loose wraps over the fibers. I use my thumb to move the fibers around the shank of the hook. At this point, give that baby some tight wraps, push back the hair and place some wraps IN FRONT of the clump.

STEP #4
Stack some natural deer hair (about a width and a half of a pencil. Place on the shank but DO NOT spin it. Make 2 loose wraps and pull down then tie in 4 or 5 tight wraps.
Note: Hold it tight at the wraps with your thumb and fore finger while making the tight wraps.
TYING TIP
Place enough tight wraps to where the hair is not spinning any longer.
