The Norman Maclean Festival – A River Runs Through It
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he 2017 In the Footsteps of Norman Maclean Festival is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Robert Redford’s iconic film, A River Runs Through It in a 3-day festival September 8-10, 2017 in Seeley Lake and Missoula, MT. Released in 1992, A River Runs Through It showcases the Blackfoot River and the Maclean Festival aims to do the same. The Festival’s Sunday’s program, From the Book to the Big Screen, will be at Missoula’s Roxy and Wilma Theaters with members of the film’s creative team: actor Tom Skerritt, screenwriter Richard Friedenberg, producer Patrick Markey and many more. Friday’s program, The Story of the Blackfoot, features tours of the Blackfoot Valley’s river conservation, Norman Maclean’s favorite Blackfoot River fishing holes, and keynote speaker Richard Manning, author of One Round River. Saturday’s program brings many of Montana’s best writers together to speak about their contribution to Annick Smith’s compilation of stories about the Blackfoot titled Headwaters. Smith is a co-executive producer of Redford’s film.
This year’s festival features dozens of Montana writers that have followed in Maclean’s footsteps, including William Kittredge, Thomas McGuane, Pete Fromm, Dee McNamer, Peter Stark and Blackfeet legend, Jack Gladstone. Visitors to the festival will be able to tour Maclean’s favorite fishing holes on the Blackfoot River, tour and learn about the successful conservation of Montana’s Blackfoot Valley and River, and the history of the Valley’s iconic dude ranches. Events are in both Seeley Lake and in Missoula’s historic, restored theater The Wilma.
