The Promise

[dropcap]O[/dropcap]ur editor and staff and contributors all believe that casting well is the cornerstone of fly fishing enjoyment. It wins you the game of chess played against what lurks on or below the surface, overcomes windy day issues, circumvents your hanging up on whatever is behind you, allows you to land flies around an obstruction, and is responsible for the promise – fish on.

Learning to turn left or right at the stop sign

The following video is an example of how to pitch a fly around the corner. It’s so easy that many have learned to do it by mistake. Cast with enough energy to park a fly at 60-feet when only 50-feet of fly line is off the reel – an unplanned abrupt stop will result. Your fly could  park way left or way right.

Putting practice to work

Well, it’s not just that simple, but you’ll see how easy it is to land a fly left of those mangroves where the bonefish are feeding, or right of that pond stump where that largemouth is picking off terrestrials. You’ll also learn how to deal with the wind curve casting, and curve cast on your weak side or nondominant side.

This Bumcast video snippet of how to cast left or right is so well done that you’ll only need to watch each one once.

Got a minute to get better at casting?
