[dropcap]I[/dropcap] recently acquired the Loon Fly Tying Tool Kit featuring the Ergo Arrow Point Scissors, Ergo All Purpose Scissors, Ergo Bobbin, Ergo Bodkin, Ergo Whip Finisher, Ergo Dubbing Brush and the Gator Grip Dubbing Spinner. The kit retails for $89.95 and is worth the money. These pieces feel solid and weighty without feeling cumbersome or heavy. The powder coated handles are really nice and smooth and feel substantial in the hand. If you are on the fence take my word or go to your closest Loon dealer and check out the quality for yourself.
The two different types of scissors are precise, sharp and comfortable. The bobbin is smooth and comfortable. I place the highest marks on this bobbin. It holds the thread spool well with just enough tension. I have experienced little to no hand fatigue tying with this bobbin designed with quality and comfort in mind. This is perhaps my favorite tool in the kit. If you are dying to learn to use a whip fisher, this one is a great one to learn on because of its larger handle and it’s comfort in the fingers. One added feature is at the base of the tool. There is a small blade that has been sharpened, so one can finish flies and clip thread without switching tools. This is a cool and innovative feature from the minds at Loon.
The bodkin is an oft overlooked tool in the arsenal of fly tying gadgets. This one is a wonderful tool that falls right into line with the rest of the tools in this kit. It has become my preferred bodkin at home. I must admit that I have yet to use the dubbing brush and the dubbing spinner but they appear to be weighty, well built and sensibly designed. All of that shat said, this entire kit comes in a handy and durable little suitcase that is great for travel or packing in a suitcase. Jealousy form fellow tyers may ensue.
If you are looking for a gift for Father’s Day, this Loon Tool Kit is a great idea. It is one of those extravagances that any tyer will appreciate. Learn more about this and other gift items for Dad at the Loon website.
