[dropcap]A[/dropcap]labama has the best college football team in the nation, but when it comes to fly fishing it’s not on any list – except an Alabama fly angler’s or angler living near its border – like Georgia. Think Caloosahatchee River, Coosa. . .

Alabama has, in fact, a very diverse fishery and a very competent Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR). If you fish, and especially if you fly fish, the ADCNR has come up with an offer you can’t refuse… a $3 crayfish poster. It’s actually free – the $3 is for postage.

While the poster itself is frameable art and collectible for that reason alone, it’s not our point. Understanding crayfish is what the poster and link are all about:  Where they live, what they look like (various species), what they eat, when they spawn, when they travel, and their ambulation characteristics. The latter is key – think fly pattern and retrieve.

You can learn what a bass, trout or anything swimming in fresh water considers chocolate mousse. And the best thing is that crayfish are “always” there – winter, summer, fall or spring.

NOTE: Featured Image is Alabama crayfish Cambarus speleocoopi: This species is distributed in the Tennessee River drainage.  It is found in small streams within caves in this region.
