A great tyer, Don Reed of Saltwater Fly Tyers in St. Augustine, Florida once said (I paraphrase here): “Lots of times tyers tie flies for themselves, not for their supposed quarry.”
Simple, but deadly
Omeko (Meko) Glinton’s fly was long ago imported from the Bahamas by Orvis and will stay on their shelves for decades to come because it catches fish. The fly itself, from a tying standpoint, is not at all of the complicated ilk nor tied solely for the benefit of the tyer. It is a serious cross-species enticer with lots of playing-time creds.
Who is Omeko Glinton?
Glinton comes from a long, long line of incredible Bahamian fly angler guides. At last report, Meko was guiding at North Riding Point, one of the Bahamas’ top lodges. Click here to learn more about Meko . . . and get a link to the lodge as well.
So, we will catch what?
Think redfish, snook, baby tarpon, permit and its intended seduction – bonefish. Actually, anything that will drool over shrimp will belly-up. My best Meko Fly take was several migrating bluefish (10- 11-pounds) in the Palm Beach, Florida surf. Luckily it was tied on a tube so the mauler-blue could not destroy the fly. That Meko Fly went on to more glory that day and even saw more combat in the days that followed.
NOTE: Featued Image is of Meko (R) with ecstatic client holding huge Bahamas caught permit.
