[dropcap]T[/dropcap]o some Cuban Americans, principally those that have had their relatives executed, jailed unjustly, disappear or simply starving – lifting the 50 year old restrictions on trade, establishing diplomatic relations along with unrestricted travel are nightmarish. A sign to them of giving into and helping the Castro tyrants. But to a younger generation it is a long overdue decision. And to the  guides and lodges in Cuba and anglers galore in the U. S., the decision to normalize relations with Cuba is welcomed if not long overdue.

The New York Times reports and opines:

The United States has been right to press for greater personal freedoms and democratic change. But its punitive approach has been overwhelmingly counterproductive. Going forward, American support for Cuba’s civil society and dissidents is likely to become more effective, in good part because other governments in the Western Hemisphere will no longer be able to treat Cuba as a victim of the United States’ pointlessly harsh policy.
