Florida Bonefish and Tarpon are Catch and Release
[dropcap]O[/dropcap]n September 1 the new Florida regulations protecting tarpon and bonefish go into affect and extends catch and release regulations into the federal waters off Florida. Bonefish & Tarpon Trust is grateful to members and supporters who participated throughout the process of making the regulation changes a reality. Your support made a huge difference, as several commissioners praised the thoughtful and informed letters they received from Bonefish and Tarpon Trust supporters leading up to the meeting. “It took teamwork on many levels to get these new regulations enacted, and we are very thankful for the Commissioners’ forward-thinking action. These new regulations have brightened the future for Florida’s bonefish and tarpon fisheries,” said BTT Chairman Tom Davidson.
South Carolina Passes New Tarpon Regulations
Another major victory for tarpon conservation occurred in June as South Carolina’s Governor signed into law a bill limiting the taking of tarpon in South Carolina. Under the new statute, only one fish per day may be taken and no fish under 77 inches in fork length may be taken. Florida recently increased its protection of tarpon by making them catch and release only with an exemption for one tarpon tag used in pursuit of an IGFA world record. South Carolina’s new regulations are a similar improvement, as it allows the taking of only one fish that has the likelihood of being a South Carolina record.
