Over the course of decades one can learn to be prudent when smitten by wanderlust
Things to have in your truck or SUV, outside of the usual stuff fly anglers carry. These would be things you take with you in your pack that ‘could’ or will make life easier.
There’s no attempt here to show how to use each item. Things to have in your truck or SUV, outside of the usual stuff fly anglers carry. These would be things you take with you in your pack that ‘could’ or will make life easier.
There’s no attempt here to show how to use each item. For example, like explaining what a carabiner is… a metal shackle with a spring-loaded gate used to quickly and reversibly connect components.
Assuming you’re an outdoor type, you’ll recognize what the useful applications would be
Being on foot, take one fly rod that can manage opportunities outside your expected encounters. For example, bass and crappie the expected, and a 15-pound carp shows up. A 6-weight would probably work [key word is ‘work’], assuming you have at least an 8-pound tippet. Or expecting snook and 30- to 50-pound tarpons shows up. An 8-weight has worked more times than I can remember.
Here my list of things that you may never need but could make your day more productive and enjoyable, and could save your life having one or more of them:
- Carabiners
- Zip ties
- Tube flies
- Tie-Fast Nail Knot-Tying Tool
- Toenail clippers – more manageable and more practical than expensive but cute nippers.
- Ibuprofen – prescribed pain killers – gauze patches – surgical tape [shit happens]
- Superglue
- High-quality compass
- Razor-sharp 6-inch blade knife
- Henry Fly Rod
- Headlamp
