At The Vise: Swimming Caddis Pupa

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]n this excellent video, the late Shane Stalcup ties an effective caddis imitation, the swimming caddispupa. This fly imitates the the stage of the caddis as it emerges and makes its way to the surface. Many caddisflies meet their maker during this stage, making this pattern extremely effective.

There are more than 14,000 species of caddisflies and they make up a huge part of the trouts diet in rivers where they are prevalent. Caddisflies are useful as bio-indicators.  They are sensitive to water pollution and are large enough to be assessed in the field making them excellent bellwethers for scientists and anglers.
