The paintings include people who have contributed to the conservation of the Everglades and give tribute to those living legends and the power of their leadership. The paintings are 6 x 4 foot oil portraits and there are a total of eleven in the collection. The most recent portrait, painted by Nicholas Petrucci, is of Mary Barley who is known for promoting “Restoring the Everglades,” a bill that has an $8 billion plan for the restoration of the Everglades. Mary’s environmental awakening began in the 1980’s when the tarpon, bone fish and snook that her and her husband loved to catch started dying off in the Florida Bay. They became aware that the fish were dying due to the algae brought down through the polluted run off in the Everglades, mostly through the sugar fields. They learned through Nat Reed that they had to work on cleaning up all the water flow in order to clean up the bay. She has been working towards this goal ever since. Mary was also recently named “Hero for the Planet” by Time Magazine for her pioneering work to save the Everglades.
