[dropcap]A[/dropcap]s fall rolls around, there is no better time to swing two-handed rods for trout, and now that many fly rod manufacturers are designing these rods, anglers need a line designed specifically for this purpose; enter RIO Product’s new Skagit Trout Max. RIO is continually designing fly lines built for specific fly fishing scenarios, and this new line is no exception.
Light two-handed trout Spey and Switch rods are ideal for many rivers and offer anglers a new method of reaching trout. The short length of 11 feet on the Skagit Trout Max easily casts in tight quarters and presents flies in a multitude of methods including stripping, jigging, and a traditional downstream swing. Skagit Trout Max heads have a mass distribution that allows for easy, sustained anchor casts with sink tips and weighted flies, and are equally effective with floating tips, VersiLeaders, and regular tapered trout leaders to delicately present smaller flies, nymphs, and soft hackles.
Skagit Trout Max heads are built on RIO’s ultra-low stretch ConnectCore for maximum in bite detection, hook set, and fish playing efficiency. These heads have a teal body and orange portion with a welded loop to attach to a shooting or running line. RIO offers this product in line sizes 2, 2/3, 3 and 3/4, which correspond to 200, 225, 250 and 275-grain weights, respectively. The Skagit Trout Max can also be used on single-handed rods, and RIO recommends stepping up 3 rods sizes to match appropriately. For example, use the #2 Skagit Trout Max on a 5-weight singled hand rod. Each head will retail for $39.95 and can be found at a RIO dealer.
