MISSOULA, Mont. – Backcountry Hunters & Anglers today responded to President Trump’s pardon of Dwight Hammond and Steven Hammond, whose arson convictions sparked the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge occupation in 2016 and helped advance current and ongoing fights over the future of American public lands and waters.
New Jersey Dam Removal to Restore Paulins Kill to Free Flowing River

TRENTON, NJ – Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Catherine R. McCabe joined other partners, including The Nature Conservancy, to launch a $7 million project to remove the Columbia Lake Dam in Knowlton Township, Warren County, making a large stretch of the Paulins Kill free-flowing again.
The project will restore important habitat for migratory fish, primarily American shad and American eel, and will enhance the public’s recreational enjoyment of the Paulins Kill, a tributary of the Delaware River.

PAONIA, Colo. – Ten thousand feet up, it’s possible to see the whole North Fork Valley from Dan Stucker’s plane. As the aircraft glides over sloping mesas with snow-dusted mountains, the land below resembles a vintage pioneer landscape.
If President Donald Trump has his way, a new feature could arrive on this vista: oil and gas pumps. His administration is opening vast stretches of public land to energy companies, and among the forests and fields under Stucker’s plane, up to 95 percent of the valley could be available to drillers.

When I was cleaning up graffiti deposited by an embarrassed-looking family, and the father muttered, “Writing your name on the rocks is an irresistible impulse,” I did not give into my own irresistible impulse and whap him alongside the head with my water bottle. I smiled and said something about how a national park belongs to everyone, and it is up to everyone to care for it properly.
