Learn to use your hands
[dropcap]G[/dropcap]enerally, folks avoid whip finishing by hand, but practice will make it easy – like riding a bike. There are tools available, but the best way is to learn to make it by hand.
There are three different ways to make a hand-tied whip-finish. One method (see video) is by wrapping thread with two fingers at the head of the fly – the fastest method.
A half-hitch knot is not a whip-finish, to cite one common error. It places only one turn of the thread as an over-wrap as opposed to a whip-finish that is commonly three to five turns.
