It is cheaper to tie your flies, I think?

By Skip Clement with video by Gig HarborĀ

The answer is yes if what you buy to tie requires you to have 20-plus of the same size and color. That, of course, rarely happens for non-professional fly tyers and has never happened to me. It is why I have so much material, but I must admit, I do get to tie flies that are my own but more like variations of a named flies.

Who would ever give up tying?

The thrill of tying a fly with your signature and creating bites has no boundary of worth.

The Gig Harbor Fly Shop video does present realities that I had not before considered, but I think that not getting out to fish 30, 40, or 50 times a year erodes the possibility of my saving money by tying my flies. That said, I’d not stop tying my own.

The Gig Harbor video flies:

  1. Wooly Bugger
  2. Gold Ribbed Flashback Hares Ear
  3. Parachute Adams
  4. Gurgler KIT
  5. Cutthroat Surf Candy: KIT
  6. Dave’s Ghost Bugger: KIT
