The butt section is chosen not by pound-test, but by stiffness and mass, which is a seldom paid attention specification – the lines’ measurement in diameter expressed in thousandths. For example, a 25-pound test monofilament from manufacturer “A” could be .023, and from manufacturer “B” 40-pound test, but only .020 in diameter or mass. The rest of the selection for the butt is stiffness, but that is a subjective term, as called out by manufacturers. Flip selects from experience – the entire focus there is on complementing the unfurling with no hump. When the connection, fly line to butt, is humpless and forms a ‘bell curve,’ all is good, and the line will be on its way to a smooth unfurling. Photo credit: Flip Pallot and Brian Flechsig.

Correcting common misconceptions about fly casting can be surprisingly simple, although it may embarrass some prideful individuals. What am I referring to? According to Flip Pallot, a prominent figure in fly fishing and the successor to Lefty Kreh, it boils down to basic high school physics.

Brian Flechsig

Brian Flechsig, the operations manager for Mad River Outfitters, Midwest Fly Fishing Schools, and Ohio Fly Fishing Guides, has made a significant discovery that should be celebrated and shared. His tutorial videos are popular among beginners and guides alike because they cover essential topics that many fly shops overlook or are unaware of. Subscribing to Flechsig’s videos is highly recommended.

What is the focus of today’s video?

It concerns the way Pallot explains how a fly rod should be rigged. Many anglers do not realize that they have been doing it all wrong. Once you understand this new approach, you might be surprised at how effective your fly casting can become—whether you’re using a three-weight or a ten-weight rod. This revelation from Flip and Brian emerged not long ago, challenging everything you thought you knew about setting up your fly rod.

The Video is Not About Nymphing

The new rigging method is both simple and logical, and once you grasp the concept, it will be hard to understand why you missed them before. Flip and Brian’s updated approach to rigging revolves around correctly unfurling the line, a fundamental aspect of casting that has a new lease on correct. They illustrate how traditional methods can lead to misconceptions if you fail to consider the Bell Curve and some straightforward math and grain weights.
