[dropcap]H[/dropcap]ere’s a great fly, simple to tie if you can deal with the “art” of cutting out foam, finishing a realistic head and gills. As mentioned by Morales, you can vary the hook size, head painting and fiber colors with marker striping. Varied to mimic any baitfish – this fly is good to go for just about any game fish that eats baitfish. So far, it’s worked on tarpon, striped bass (Masahito Sato), snook and largemouth bass (variations).

The fly was originated by a Boston tyer named Masahito Sato, a striped bass fisherman.

Tying Materials

Hooks: Any short hook for sea fishing. The pictures show a Daiichi 3111, Black Ace, 3/0 size.

Thread: Transparent nylon, 0, 10 mm thick approximately.

Wing (body of the minnow): SF fibres, Charteuse, white, grey and olive. At the back, olive Angel Hair or similar. I have tied great minnows and others that worked perfectly by changing the SF color and the head paint. Also, attractor patterns of different colors. Feel free to try and test different variants.

Head: White foam, 2mm thick, cut and painted with nail varnish or markers. When it is finished, the paint is covered with a fine layer of 30 minute drying epoxy.

Eyes: 3D or similar. Jurassic Eyes by Montana Files are very interesting for this fly, these have three colors and have an oval-shaped eye pupil that adds a special character to the finished fly.
