BOZEMAN, Montana
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he River’s Edge and Simms Fishing Products are hosting the 10th annual Chica de Mayo women’s fly-fishing event in Bozeman, Montana, on Cinco de Mayo (May 5).
“Back in May 2009, when we first held this event, we were sort of just “testing the waters” and hoping for 20 to 30 women to show up – we had about 60 gals show up and we couldn’t believe it. Each year after that first event, more and more women continue to show up and bring their friends,” said Sarah Clark, The River’s Edge, Master Event Coordinator. “We have reached maximum capacity at around 200+ women consistently showing up the past few years now. I even have a handful of ladies that have attended every Chica de Mayo event – that’s so cool!”
The River’s Edge West (59 North Star Lane in Bozeman), will the be gathering place for a day designed just for female fly fishers. This year, the event includes several educational clinics where women can to learn, ask questions, and fine tune their fly fishing skills. These clinics will be hosted by some of the best in the field and there will be incentives for participation.
Chica de Mayo is also welcoming Paula Shearer from PS On The Fly as a guest speaker. Paula is an angler and guide on the Bow River and Southern Alberta streams, and an ambassador for several fly fishing companies. Paula will share her unique journey into guiding fly fishing.
The conference will also hear from Bozeman-based writer and editor, Sarah Grigg. Sarah is passionate about the craft of outdoor communication and how women in fly fishing (and any realm, really) can define their own terms for success. The Casting for Recovery crew and The pink drift boat will be on hand, and there will be some great opportunities to fundraise for this important cause. There will be lots of prizes, plenty of fun, and a cocktail party to round out the day, so, grab a girlfriend and come hang out with some fun and fishy women!
